Why is FR-4 widely used in PCB manufacturing?
PCB board is the foundation of any electrical equipment, and using different materials to manufacture them not only affects the final product, but also affects price, reliability, and durability.
01. What are the materials for PCB board?
The most common material for manufacturing rigid PCB boards is glass fiber laminates impregnated with epoxy resin.
The flexible base materials used for producing flexible PCBs include PET polyethylene terephthalate, PEN polyethylene terephthalate, and PI polyimide.
02. What is FR grade material?
FR is a material category for glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin laminates. FR-4 material is a reinforced epoxy resin laminated material made of epoxy resin and flame-retardant glass fiber fabric. Due to the addition of bromine, it is a self extinguishing material.
The category identification of fiberglass laminates includes G-10, G-11, FR-4, FR-5, and FR-6.
Among them, FR-4 is the most widely used grade today. G-10 is the predecessor of FR-4 and lacks the flame retardancy of FR-4.
Therefore, in most cases, FR-4 replaces G-10 and is the ideal choice for manufacturing PCBs.
03.FR-4 material
FR-4 material is a common and widely used substrate material with excellent electrical insulation performance, mechanical strength, and high temperature resistance. It hardly absorbs water, FR-4 is most commonly used as an electrical insulator and has a certain mechanical strength.
This material is known for maintaining its high mechanical value and electrical insulation properties under dry or humid conditions. These attributes, together with good manufacturing performance, make this grade practical in various electrical and mechanical applications.
Its glass transition temperature (TG) is approximately 115 ° C to 200 ° C. The standard FR-4 material for PCB manufacturing will be between two thin layers of copper plated FR-4.
04. Example of FR-4
1. Standard FR-4: As the name suggests, this is a standard FR-4 with a heat resistance between 140 ° C and 150 ° C.
2. High TG FR-4: This type of FR-4 has a relatively high glass transition temperature (TG) of approximately 180 ° C.
3. High CTI FR-4: Comparative tracking index above 600 volts.
4. FR-4 without copper plating: suitable for insulation boards and board brackets.
05. Why choose FR-4?
The affordable price of FR-4 makes it a suitable choice for small batch or prototype PCB production. Its economy helps consumers reduce the cost of PCB manufacturing.
FR-4 is the most widely used material in PCB manufacturing. The circuit board made of FR-4 is sturdy, waterproof, and provides good insulation between copper layers to minimize interference and promote good signal integrity.
However, FR-4 is not suitable for high-frequency PCBs. Similarly, if you wish to embed a circuit board into a product that is not easily accessible to components and is not suitable for flexible circuit boards, you should choose another material: polyimide/polyamide.
06.High quality FR-4 material
VENTEC material is a high-quality FR-4 material that is also suitable for high-performance applications. It is mainly used as a substitute for multi-layer PCBs with higher Tg requirements.
VENTEC VT-47 material has slightly higher processing requirements, but it can serve as a substitute for the high Tg materials we use today because it has the same parameters. It is used in automotive, medical, industrial applications, as well as communication and computer technology.
VENTEC VT-47 is the basic material for double-layer and multi-layer printed circuit boards, and is also suitable for the production of soft hard bonding boards. Due to the appropriate rheological properties of the resin, it is also suitable for lead-free soldering.
